Transportation

The most common form of transportation in Uganda is by foot.  You can walk anywhere in Jinja, even to Lake Victoria in about 15 minutes.  However, there are ways to get around without walking.

You can easily get around Jinja using boda-bodas.  There are motor scooter & motorcycle boda-bodas and bicycle boda-bodas.

The average price for a one way trip down Main St. is 500 shillings.  Drivers, however, may try and charge the mzungu (white man) price.  If so, just bargain with them for the normal charge.

You should expect to pay 500 to 1000 shillings one way from NGM Jinja House to  the banks on Main Street.

The other common form of transport is the taxi. The taxi in Uganda is the 14 passenger van, which usually carries 20 passengers. You should expect to pay 300 shillings for a trip down Main Street, but expect a few stops along the way. The taxis are only found on the larger roads, more frequently traveled routes, so you probably won’t be using them much in and around Jinja.

The last form of transport is the special hire. This is a small car that you hire for you and your friends, up to 5. They will take you directly, anywhere you would like to go. You should expect to pay 5,000 shillings from The Jinja House to the Jinja roundabout. If you choose to use this form of transportation, it is good to find a driver and get his phone number so he can pick you up at your convenience.

If you would like to go to Kampala, it is best to go to the Jinja taxi park and take public transport by taxi. The Jinja Taxi Park is located across from the Jinja market.  Ask where the coasters to Kampala are and someone will direct you. The coasters are small buses, but larger than taxis, that go all the way to the old taxi park in Kampala. You will just wait for a few minutes until the bus is full and then they will depart.  They do not pick up passengers along the way, as some taxis do, they only drop off. This makes for a faster and usually safer trip to Kampala. It normally takes about 90 minutes to get there and costs 4,000 shillings one way.

When you decide to return to Jinja, find your way to the old taxi park and ask someone where the buses to Jinja are.
